Last night I saw Man of Steel. They’ve done a great job at modernizing the story of Superman. The first portion of the movie brings us to Krypton, a beautiful and charismatic world (almost Avatarish). Unfortunately, the planet’s core has become unstable and kryptonians are doomed. A small shuttle with a newborn baby is launched into the ocean of stars…
Here’s a good synopsis from the movie’s official website:
A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young boy, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.
This movie shows us the most powerful and yet most vulnerable superhero you can imagine. Before becoming Superman, Clark is incredibly conflicted, lonely and lost. He’s on a quest to find out who he is and where he is from.
My personal tidbits:
– I like the new suit. I think it’s awesome (c’mon, admit it, we’re miles away from the colorful spandex version!)
– I was a bit surprised to see some parents walking in the theatre with their young kids before the movie started. I saw one woman walking out of the theatre with her two kids at about two thirds of the movie. This movie is intense. Some fight/battle scenes are not really for kids.
– One bummer: this flick suffers from the BGMDTT syndrome (i.e. Bad-Guy-Must-Die-Three-Times!). The final battle scene between Clark and General Zod drags on (… and there’s an awful lot of collateral damage while they fight).
Overall, a very good movie. My rating: 8 on 10. In my eyes, the best Superman movie so far (… but it doesn’t beat my #1 favourite movie this year… Star Trek Into Darkness).
If you’re curious to know a little more about this movie, then you must watch the Man of Steel 13 Minute Featurette (2013):
Oh, and if you want to see what your Kryptonian identity would be if you were born on Krypton, try the Glyph creator at http://manofsteel.warnerbros.com. I was curious to try it out… here’s what mine looks like:
(huh, it looks weird!)
